Lost Planet 3, players control Jim Peyton, who travels beyond our solar system to provide for his family on Earth.
Peyton is hired by Neo-Venus Construction (NEVEC) to prepare the icy planet E.D.N. III for colonization.
Earth faces an energy crisis, which can be solved using thermal energy, a substance abundant on E.D.N. III.
The planet is inhabited by alien creatures called Akrid, which come in various shapes and sizes, all bent on turning Peyton into their next meal.
Players navigate the cold wilderness of E.D.N. III in a first-person perspective while in a rig (mech-like vehicle), and in third-person perspective when on foot.
The switch between first and third-person perspectives adds variety, with rig combat providing a break from the foot combat.
The Akrid come in different types, but the strategy for defeating them remains the same: shoot the glowing orange parts, dodge attacks, reload, and repeat.
Occasionally, players must face bosses using the rig, but these battles are often underwhelming.
Players can upgrade both their weapons and rig’s capabilities as the game progresses, though the rig itself can’t be weaponized.
The combat with the rig doesn’t live up to expectations, failing to provide the excitement of giant mechs battling massive alien creatures, as the action becomes repetitive.
During rig combat, players must hit specific buttons at the right time to dodge, clamp the alien, and use the rig’s drill to finish the battle.
